For 40 years, Eduan Naude and Brian Shalkoff have entertained royals, rock stars, presidents, and audiences from all over Africa in this marvelously cluttered restaurant in Newtown's Cultural Precinct. Not everyone enjoys the food, and the menu sometimes sacrifices excellence in favor of authenticity, but Sen. Hillary Clinton apparently loved the mopani worms (masonja), and the umnqusho, a mixture of braised beef shins, beans, and maize, is Mandela's favorite dish. The mogodu, a black tripe and wild African spinach stew, is a hit with those looking for truly traditional fare. For the more timid, there are prawns and the mild Cape-Malay vegetarian and meat curries; ostrich filet and deep-fried crocodile are also worth considering. Although a half-kilo of king-size Mozambican prawns will dent your wallet, most dishes are under R90 ($13/£6.45), and there are regular buffets (from R165/$23/£12) showcasing an array of African dishes including Ethiopian Doro Wot (chicken in a rich pepper sauce), Tunisian dolmadaki (vine leaves stuffed with herb-flavored rice, and traditional South African babotie.
