Frommer's Review
Lyon-born gourmand Michel Morand fell in love with South Africa and moved here nearly 2 decades ago. Teaming up with local Vusi Sithole, he has created what critics consider the city's top restaurant. Morand knows Jo'burg's major players (including good friend Madiba), and some of the country's biggest (and wealthiest) names come to his classy Sandton restaurant to indulge in out-of-the-ordinary French dishes. Formal and gracious, with high-back chairs and stiff napkins, Auberge Michel prides itself on the fact that the menu changes regularly and no dish is ever repeated; the emphasis is on producing high-quality, highly original cuisine that evolves out of specially sought-out ingredients. Between sojourns at different Michelin-rated restaurants in Europe, chef Frederic Leloup and his team toil tirelessly inventing spectacular innovations; if you want to find out what's in store when you're in town, check out the current menu on the Web (a brief glance is sure to get you salivating).
