Frommer's Review
This landmark hotel stands out in idiosyncratic pink, clinging to the steep incline of Westcliff ridge; you need to park at reception, from where you're shuttled up along winding cobbled lanes to one of the most spectacular settings in town. The location is the best thing about this favored haunt of celebrities and politicos: Hanging on the lip of the large infinity pool, the green suburbs of northern Johannesburg spread out before you; as dusk approaches, head here -- or the adjacent Polo Lounge -- and enjoy cocktails while the sun descends and the sky turns pink over the spectacle of the endless forested canopy, forever changing your perception of this sprawling city. Sundowners are also a great way to meet interesting and talented Jo'burgers who gather here for business parties or simply to set the night in motion. Later, move upstairs, where a sophisticated menu is served up in rather formal surroundings. Guest rooms vary considerably -- each is uniquely positioned and sized, but you'll find that understated elegance is the order of the day, and the palatial marble bathrooms are a real treat. Do insist on a room with a view, preferably with a balcony (units in Villa 4, appropriately named "Cliffside," are recommended, particularly nos. 401, 405, 406, 423, or 424; alternatively, try for nos. 105, 201, 503, or 605). A complimentary shuttle will take you to the shopping districts of Sandton and Hyde Park some 15 minutes away; Melville and Rosebank are less than 10 minutes away.
