Frommer's Review

Located in a peaceful suburb a few minutes' drive from Sandton central, this certainly sequesters you from the buzz of Jozi life with lovely lawns overlooked by a smart dining terrace, but the real reason to stay here are the palatial-size and luxuriously styled rooms. Each suite has its own theme and personality; suites in the Courtyard wing have been accented to represent a particular style or period (French Provincial, Africa, English Manor, and Swedish, for example), while those in the newer Premier wing are themed on luminary figures who've somehow touched South Africa. These include the Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela suites, and -- like the hearts of the celebrities they're named after -- they're enormous. There are still generous touches like complimentary tea trays (delivered to your room on request), transfers to Sandton, sherry in the room, and shoeshines, but the hotel is now part of a larger chain, and some of the finer hands-on attention to detail has disappeared. You may also find it a little too cut off from the action; then again, with a plush spa and wonderful gardens, being out of the throbbing city may be just the thing.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; lounge; pool; library; airport transfers; spa, gym, steam room; secretarial services; laundry; limited room service; Wi-Fi enabled; travel assistance; doctor-on-call

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
