Part baroque fantasy, part neoclassical brick mansion, this over-the-top faux-Tuscan manor offers exactly what the name suggests: good views upstairs, mostly toward the Melville Koppies, while cherub statues dot the concrete columns. It's sounds garish, but somehow it works, and this is the best option in Melville (if you prefer a more contemporary look, however, opt for The Space or Guesthouse 61 on 5th; ), with tall picture windows, in-room columns and archways, plush linens, and great showers. Insist on a room on the upper floor -- these have the loveliest views -- and in winter ask for a fireplace. The largest rooms are nos. 21, 32, and 33, but nos. 22 and 23 have gorgeous views and offer good value. The lounges and dining-room areas feel a bit like an old-fashioned movie set, but the eclectic arrangements and assorted furnishings somehow work to create a relaxed environment. Your hosts, Lise Wallis and her husband, are not only enthusiastic about their neighborhood and happy to make dining recommendations, but will also chat about local art and recent developments in the city. They will also arrange to have you dropped off and picked up for a night on the town (the guesthouse, while in Melville, is not convenient for walking).
