Frommer's Review
It may be a tad off the beaten track, but this romantic retreat is well worth the 1-hour drive from Jo'burg or Tshwane to luxuriate in clear mountain air, relax in the tiptop spa, and savor exquisitely prepared food on a lantern-lit lawn. Besides, some of the region's top attractions are nearby (the Sterkfontein Caves are only 15 min. away, and the De Wildt Cheetah Centre and Lesedi Cultural Village are also within easy striking distance); Mount Grace also makes the ideal stopover if you're traveling to Sun City or Madikwe Game Reserve. Expect top-notch pampering, spacious, comfortable rooms, and plenty of understated luxury. Even the thatched-roof Spa at Mount Grace brings a refreshing "healthy hedonism" ethos to spa culture: After unwinding in the Hydrotherapy Spa Garden, you'll be served a glass of good South African wine on the spa veranda. Accommodations are stellar: Thatchstone Village rooms overlook garden pathways, Grace Village rooms have patios with garden views, and Treetops Village, set apart from the rest of the hotel in a forested ravine, offers huge luxury suites with balconies or patios. But it's worth asking for one of the 10 rooms in Mountain Village, which have private heated plunge pools on balconies overlooking the glittering valley below. From there you can walk down steps carved into the hillside to one of two warmly lit restaurants, with both indoor and outdoor seating.
Facilities:2 restaurants; spa cafe; bar and billiards room; 3 swimming pools; tennis; spa; gift shop; mountain biking; croquet lawn; fly-fishing; bird-watching and bird walks; horseback riding, squash, and hot-air ballooning by arrangement; transfers on request; library; laundry; doctor on call.
