Ten Bompas ReviewThis is one of the first boutique hotels to open in Gauteng, and was featured in Design Hotels. Proprietors Christoff van Staden and Peter Aucamp asked 10 interior designers to design a suite (each with a separate lounge and bedroom, a fireplace, guest toilet, steam bath, and plenty of natural light, with access to the outdoors via a ground-floor patio or a balcony). The results are a mixed bag and they look a little dated; personal taste will determine your affection for a particular suite, but all are extremely comfortable. Despite its relative proximity to a great deal of action (Rosebank Mall, Melville, Parkhurst, and the CBD), Bompas' small size means it offers more tranquillity than Fairlawns (though, personally, I prefer Fairlawns' decor). That said, the place is a popular dining venue (called Sides), so the vibe picks up around mealtimes. Given the suite size, all the add-ins (such as complimentary minibar and laundry), and generally good service, this is very good value. (Incidentally, Christoff and Peter also own Honeyguide Mantobeni, one of our favorite tented camps and can put together a smooth package.) Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
