Ivan's Stress Free Bar & White Bay Campground Review

A seventh-generation native of Jost Van Dyke, Ivan Chinnery runs this campground, featuring a choice of campsites, equipped tent sites wired for electricity, and one-room "cabins" made of plywood and furnished with screens, ceiling fans, refrigerators, large beds, and access to showers and flush toilets. Amenities include food service, a communal kitchen, drinking water, picnic tables, and a public phone. Located on the east end of White Bay Beach, this place is simplicity itself, but it's also the most happening place on the island. Locals and yachties gather in Ivan's Stress Free Bar at happy hour, enjoying sundowners as the wafting aroma of dinner emerges from the communal kitchen. Evening singalongs are a tradition. The big jam night is Saturday; Thursday is the well-attended barbecue night. Ivan, who plays guitar in the Ever Changing All Star International Band (the house band), is the island's top guitar player. Visiting musicians often drop in -- yes, even Keith Richards or Jimmy Buffet.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
