Frommer's Review
Houdini stayed at the President; Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, and Patsy Kline all performed here. But then the 1926 historic landmark shut down and remained empty for 25 years, reopening in 2006 in a prime spot next to the Power & Light District. It's been restored to its former grandeur, with a stately lobby that closely matches its 1941 former self; the impressive, high-ceilinged Walnut Room offering fine dining; the historic Drum Room offering dinner and entertainment; and comfortable guest rooms adorned with black-and-white photographs of Kansas City. With its history-evoking setting, great location, and lively past, it's a good choice for celebratory occasions.

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
