Getting There -- The Kelowna airport is north of the city on Hwy. 97. Air Canada Jazz (tel. 888/247-8747) offers regular flights from Calgary and Vancouver. Horizon Air (tel. 800/547-9308; www.alaskaair.com) offers service from Seattle. WestJet (tel. 888/937-8538; www.westjet.com) operates flights from Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, and Edmonton.

Greyhound Canada (tel. 800/661-8747) travels between Vancouver and Kelowna daily. The adult fare is C$68. Three buses per day continue on to Calgary. The toll Coquihalla Highway (Hwy. 5) links Kelowna and the Okanagan to the Vancouver area. The 395km (245-mile) drive from Vancouver takes 4 hours. From Kelowna to Calgary, it's 623km (387 miles) over slower roads.

Special Events -- Kelowna gets its busy summer festival season off to a bang with the Knox Mountain Hill Climb (tel. 250/861-1990), held for half a century on the second-to-last weekend in May. This motor-sport race involves both cars and motorcycles, and is the longest hill-climb race in North America. The Okanagan Wine Festival (tel. 250/861-6654; www.owfs.com) is celebrated in late September and early October in wineries and restaurants throughout the area.
