Nevertheless, because of this, most locals in the tourism industry do accept that non-African visitors may be gay, so you'll receive no discrimination. However, complete discretion is advised -- even public displays of affection between a heterosexual couple are frowned upon on the Muslim coast and Zanzibar. Although in saying that, platonic affection between African males, such as holding hands or, by Muslims, kissing on the cheek, is common and a sign of friendship and respect.
