Open for nearly 2 decades, the Cafe des Artistes' impressive longevity is the result of its winning combination of food and atmosphere. The fact that it was once part of a hotel built in 1935 by Al Capone's bookkeeper adds to its allure, but it's really the food that's the draw. Traditional French meals benefit from a subtle tropical twist. Start with the duck-liver pâté, made with fresh truffles and old cognac, or Maryland crabmeat served with a confit of artichoke heart and herbed tomato. Nouvelle and traditional French entrees include anything from lobster flambé, with mango and basil, to wine-basted lamb chops rubbed with rosemary and ginger.
