Frontenac Club Inn

On one of the most attractive streets in town, lined with handsome 19th-century houses, this limestone building still manages to catch the eye. Erected in 1845 as a bank, it was made a private men's club in 1903 and a century later became an exemplary bed-and-breakfast. The large common rooms on the ground floor are furnished with oversize leather sofas and chairs, and the breakfast area is expanded onto a deck in summer. Bedrooms are on the second and third floors (though there is no elevator); they're uncommonly spacious, some with seating grouped around gas fireplaces, and a few even outfitted with Jacuzzis. Some rooms are named for guests of the former club -- guys like Alexander Graham Bell, Carl Sandburg, and Prime Minister Mackenzie King (you might have heard of them.) Ambitious new construction has added bedrooms and meeting spaces, expanded the dining area, and created more parking space.
