Kodiak has more than 30 B&Bs. Beyond the roads, some of Alaska's best wilderness lodges are on Kodiak Island in remote areas and near Native villages. The visitor center posts links to many B&Bs and lodges on its website at www.kodiak.org, or you can call Kodiak Lodging and Reservations (tel. 907/539-5346) for information about a variety of short-term and long-term options.

Recently opened is the Kodiak Island Hostel and Laundry (www.kodiakislandhostel.com; tel. 907/486-0373). Proprietor Rhonda Maker offers sparkling clean rooms with a variety of bed configurations for $30 and up per night.

A Smiling Bear Bed & Breakfast, near Fort Abercrombie (www.asmilingbear.com; tel. 907/481-6390), has suites with Jacuzzis and serves gourmet breakfasts for $150 to $175 double in the high season. The couple that offers the Galley Gourmet dinner cruise also operates the well-appointed Cliff House Bed and Breakfast, with four rooms from $125 to $150 double. It's on a quiet street with ocean views within walking distance of downtown.
