Planning a Trip

Visitor Information

A Tourist Information Centre (tel. 09/516-1007) is located on Jalan Penjara in the center of town. The staff is exceptionally helpful and good at answering specific inquiries. The official website for the Pahang tourism board is www.pahangtourism.com.my.

Getting There

The most convenient way to get to Kuantan is by a quick flight from KL. Malaysia Airlines (tel. 1300/883-000; www.malaysiaairlines.com) flies daily from KL. Flights arrive at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport (tel. 09/538-1291). Just outside the airport is a taxi stand where you can get a cab to Kuantan for RM30 ($8.40/£4.20) or to Cherating for RM60 ($17/£8.40).

Bus routes service Kuantan from all parts of the peninsula, and thanks to the opening in 2004 of a beautiful new highway linking Kuantan to KL, the trip is only 5 hours. Transnasional operates hourly buses for RM17 ($4.75/£2.40) from Puduraya Bus Terminal on Jalan Pudu (tel. 03/2070-3300). The bus terminal in Kuantan is in Kompleks Makmur. Taxis at the stand just outside the terminal can take you to town for RM10 ($2.80/£1.40).

Outstation taxis from KL (tel. 03/2078-0213) will cost RM200 ($56/£28) for the 3-hour trip. The outstation taxi stand in Kuantan is at the bus terminal.

Getting Around

The areas in the town's center are nice for walking. Otherwise stick with taxis, which can be waved down on any street. There's also a stand behind the Tourist Information Centre where you'll be sure to find a cab in a pinch. Taxis here are not metered, so you must negotiate the fare before you set out. This is a good deal when you want to hire someone for a few hours to take you around the city. Rates start at about RM15 ($4.20/£2.10) per hour. Use taxis to travel to areas of interest outside the city.

Fast Facts

The area code for Kuantan and Cherating is 09. Most major banks and ATMs are located appropriately along Jalan Bank, near the State Mosque. Internet service is available from a couple of cafes at the Kompleks Makmur; check the shopping mall adjacent to the bus terminal.
