According to U.S.-based Golf Digest magazine, if you're looking for China's best courses, forget Shanghai, Beijing, or Shenzhen -- the best golf in China is in Kunming. Kunming took three of the top six spots on Golf Digest's top 10 list, including Spring City Golf & Lake Resort (Lake course), Kunming, Yunnan province taking first; Spring City Golf & Lake Resort (Mountain course), Kunming, Yunnan province in second; and then reappearing at the number six spot on the list with Lakeview Golf Club, which has been the site of the Yunnan stops of the Omega China Tour as well as the Faldo Series Asia. The Spring City Golf and Lake Resort, located 48km (29 miles) southeast of Kunming, has a championship 18-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus and another by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Standard rooms at the five-star resort (tel. 0871/767-1188; www.springcitygolf.com) cost ¥1,504, while a round of golf will set you back ¥1,760.
For something more exciting, Mike Fougere (tel. 15825256431; mike4g_air@yahoo.ca) is a Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada (HPAC)-certified paragliding instructor based in Kunming. He has been paragliding for more than 10 years and is available -- winds permitting -- to pilot tandem flights around Kunming at a rate of ¥300 per person (plus transport expenses).
