A convenient place for a meal if you're visiting Nijo Castle (across the street), Unkai has a modern and refined decor, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking greenery, and kimono-clad waitresses. The English-language menu has photos illustrating shabu-shabu, kaiseki, tempura, and shojin ryori (a vegetarian set meal typical of Kyoto). The ¥5,250 ($50) Miyako Course is the one most often recommended for foreigners and includes an appetizer, sashimi, custard, grilled fish, tempura, miso soup, and rice.
