New Miyako Hotel Review

Sister hotel to the famous Westin Miyako in eastern Kyoto, this is a popular choice near Kyoto Station due to its location near the terminus of both the Shinkansen and Kintetsu trains. The city bus terminus, however, is a 5-minute walk away on the other side of Kyoto Station, and the hotel has the dubious honor of being Kyoto's largest. After passing through the utilitarian, almost spartan lobby, you'll reach rooms that vary in price according to floor and size, though the view is nothing special (children may like rooms facing the front, where they can see the Shinkansen trains arrive, though they're noisier). The cheapest twins are so small that couples may fight over who gets the lone luggage rack, while those in the classier (and pricier) south wing seem like a different hotel altogether, with tall ceilings, mock balconies, and upbeat colors. I like the rooftop summer beer garden with its all-you-can-eat buffet (those staying at the hotel get a discount).

Facilities:
4 restaurants; bar; lounge; beer garden (summer only); lobby computers w/free Internet; room service; smoke-free rooms

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
