Frommer's Review
Although it looks rather ordinary from the outside, this guesthouse is actually a reconstructed, 130-year-old former sake brewery, located on a quiet residential street in the heart of the city. It's the home of Hirota Harumi, a retired interpreter/tour guide who speaks perfect English and is happy to impart valuable sightseeing information about the town she knows so well. All the rooms she rents out are tatami style; the cheapest are equipped only with fans (no air-conditioning) and face the front street, which can be noisy, while the most expensive add the comfort of air-conditioning and face the garden. Best of all is the detached, two-story cottage, which is actually a converted kura (warehouse) standing in a corner of the garden, with sliding screens that open to the outdoors, bathroom, kitchenette, table with leg wells, and enough room to sleep a family of seven. Japanese breakfasts are served in a pleasant room with a view of the garden.
Facilities:
Rental bikes (¥500/$4.75 per day); in-room massage; babysitting; dry-cleaning/laundry service; nonsmoking rooms
