Known for its tempura, this inn also offers tatami rooms, the best of which offer views of the largest garden I've seen in a downtown Kyoto ryokan. Built more than 100 years ago and opening as an inn a half-century ago, it offers the extra benefit of leg wells under the tables of its tatami rooms, making dining easier for foreigners not used to sitting on the floor. Otherwise, it offers the usual elegance you'd expect from an inn of this caliber.
