Directly west of Granada is a huge, pristine volcano lake known as Laguna de Apoyo. This dark blue body of water is 200m (656 ft.) deep and set in a lush, forest-covered circular valley with nature trails, small villages, and the occasional ministerial mansion. The crater is alive with animals, including white-face monkeys, butterflies, toucans, and hummingbirds. The Volcán Apoyo is very much dormant, though it is known to tremor occasionally, and the lake holds some underwater thermal vents. Because of the lake's isolated habitat, it contains several unique species of fish. There are a handful of restaurants and lodges on the lakeshore, but to truly appreciate the lake's sweeping grandeur, it is best to view it from the rim above, especially from the several miradores you come across while touring the Pueblos Blanco.
