The boat on the front lawn immediately lets you know that this small museum has something to do with water. Actually, it's dedicated to the memory of Major John Wesley Powell, who in 1869 led a small group of men on a courageous -- some say foolhardy -- expedition down the Green and Colorado rivers, traveling almost 1,000 miles through largely uncharted territory. The museum documents Powell's expedition with photographs, etchings, and artifacts. It also contains exhibits of American Indian arts and crafts, from ancient Ancestral Puebloan pottery to modern Navajo and Hopi weavings, pottery, and jewelry. Other highlights include fluorescent rock minerals, a stamp collection, and dinosaur tracks. Changing exhibits of works by local artists are also featured. Allow about an hour.
