Frommer's Review
It's amazing how much Tahoe's culinary scene has improved in the last 5 years. And it has only gotten better since San Francisco restaurateurs Johnny Alamilla and Brian Reccow moved to North Lake Tahoe and opened the region's only Nuevo Latino restaurant. It's right on the lake, and the gorgeous views from every window are reason enough to come here. The new decor is unique, a sort of mountain-meets-urban-chic look -- rough-hewn timbers and wrought iron agreeably clash with silk shades and soft lighting. The menu will be unfamiliar territory to most diners, so it's a good idea to converse with your server before ordering; I never would have tried the fantastic quinoa minicasserole (with smoked tomato cream gratin and melted queso cotija) if I hadn't asked about it, and I'm still thinking about that dish. The tapas, such as the charred rare ahi tuna with a coriander crust and roasted tomato achiote oil, are all very reasonably priced at $6 to $11, and ideal for family style dining. The churrascaría-style pork loin chop with smoked chile jus and a side of jícama-cabbage slaw is also quite good. Be sure to arrive early for a pitcher of sangria with a side of yucca fries at the horseshoe-shaped bar, and beg the hostess for a table in the lower atrium, which has the best lake views.
