The most highly recommended and most prestigious hotel in town was originally built in 1880 in a location adjacent to Stora Torget (the town's main square) and enlarged in 1923. Rising four floors, with access to a beautiful garden that's centered on a circular reflecting pool, it offers a traditional, consciously upscale decor. For example, dozens of yards of fabric are sewn into the most elaborate draperies in town, and the furnishings are mostly Chippendale or Queen Anne in the public areas. The sense of plush, well-heeled bourgeoisie taste also comes through in the architectural adornments, such as in the ceiling friezes showing cherubs cavorting across vineyards, which are surrounded by formal, usually neoclassical moldings. Bedrooms have high ceilings, austere furnishings, thick carpets, and small but very efficient bathrooms with showers.
