Bicycling
The Lodge at Koele (tel. 808/565-7300) rents mountain bikes for $8 an hour. You get a backpack and lunch with a 4-hour ($35) or 8-hour ($55) rental.
Horseback Riding
Horses can take you to many places in Lanai's unique landscape that are otherwise unreachable. The Four Seasons Lanai Resort's Stables at Koele (tel. 808/565-4424) offers various rides, including slow, gentle group rides starting at $85 for a 1 1/2-hour Paniolo Trail Ride, which takes you into the hills surrounding Koele. You'll meander through guava groves and ironwood trees; catch glimpses of axis deer, quail, wild turkeys, and Santa Getrudis cattle; and end with panoramic views of Maui and Lanai. For 2 hours in the saddle they offer the Mahana Ride for $95. Private rides can be arranged for $95 per person for 1 hour and $150 per person for 2 hours. In the works is a 3-hour lunch ride; call for details. Long pants and shoes are required; safety helmets are provided. Bring a jacket; the weather is chilly and rain is frequent. Children must be at least 9 years old and 4 feet tall, and riders cannot weigh more than 250 pounds.
Tennis
Public courts, lit for night play, are available in Lanai City at no charge; call tel. 808/565-6979 for reservations. Guests staying at The Lodge at Koele or the Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay have tennis privileges at either the Tennis Center at Manele, with its six Plexipave courts, a fully equipped pro shop, and tournament facilities; or at the courts at Koele. Instruction is available for $25 for a clinic, $65 for a private 1-hour lesson. Courts are complimentary for hotel guests (and not open to nonguests). For information, call tel. 808/565-2072.
