The Lodge at Koele (tel. 808/565-4552) rents mountain bikes for $10 an hour to resort guests only.

Horseback Riding

Horses can take you to many places in Lanai's unique landscape that are otherwise unreachable. The Four Seasons Lanai Resort's Stables at Koele (tel. 808/565-4424) offers various daily rides, including slow, gentle group excursions starting at $110 for a 1 1/2-hour Paniolo Trail Ride, which takes you into the hills surrounding Koele. You'll meander through guava groves and ironwood trees; catch glimpses of axis deer, quail, wild turkeys, and Santa Gertrudis cattle; and end with panoramic views of Maui and Lanai. Private 1-hour rides can be arranged for $200 per person; 2-hour sunset rides go for $250 per person. Long pants and closed-toe shoes (like running shoes) are required, and safety helmets are provided. Bring a jacket -- the weather is chilly and rain is frequent. Children must be at least 9 years old and 4 feet tall, and riders cannot weigh more than 225 pounds.

Tennis

Public courts, lit for night play, are available in Lanai City at no charge; call tel. 808/565-6979 for reservations. If you're staying at the Lodge at Koele or at Manele Bay, you can take advantage of the lodge's three new Premiere Cushion outdoor hard courts, with complimentary use of Prince racquets, balls, and bottled water. You're also invited to experience the tennis center at the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay, which offers a full pro shop, use of a ball machine, and weekly tennis mixers and tournaments.
