The district of Land Salzburg seems like one vast outdoor playland -- from skiing in winter to canoeing, fishing, golfing, hiking, and much more in summer.

Canoeing & Rafting -- In summer, many visitors head for either the Salzkammergut or the Pinzgau, regions of Land Salzburg known for their beautiful lakes and roaring white-water streams. Lakes here are ideal for canoeing, rafting, or kayaking because the waters aren't polluted and the government limits powerboats, making the waters safer.

One of the best outfitters is Club Zwilling, Waldhof 64, Abtenau (tel. 06243/3069), and well recommended is Motion Center, Andreas Voglastätter, Lofer (tel. 06588/7524), located at the edge of Lake Sallachsee.

Other centers for watersports include Rafting Center Taxenbach, Marktstrasse 38 (tel. 06543/5352), at the edge of the Salzach River. You can also call Adventure Service, Steinergrasse 9, in Zell am See (tel. 06542/73525), a cheerful and well-managed outfit that offers guided excursions with instruction in rafting, white-water kayaking, sailing, canoeing, paragliding, hiking, and mountain climbing.

Cross-Country Skiing & Downhill Skiing -- We've previewed in this chapter the most important ski resorts. For more options, contact one of the 120 local tourist offices for details on the dozens of ski schools in the province that provide instruction to novice and experienced skiers. For complete skiing data, write or call the Salzburg State Tourist Board .

Fishing -- You'll find some wonderful places to fish, but you'll need a license, which you can obtain at the local tourist office where you're staying. For more information about where to fish in the province, call the Salzburg State Tourist Board .

Golf -- If you'd like to play a round of alpine golf, you can get a complete listing of the provincial courses from the Salzburg State Tourist Board .

Hiking -- This is a great place to hike. The Salzburg State Tourist Board (above) stocks a very helpful brochure called "Walking and Trekking," which surveys the many trails in the province.
