Frommer's Review
One of the most impressive resorts in the Caribbean, with a flash and glitter that remains supremely tasteful, El Conquistador has an incredible array of facilities. Rebuilt in 1993 at a cost of $250 million, it encompasses 500 acres (200 hectares) of forested hills sloping to the sea. Accommodations are divided into five separate sections that share the common themes of Mediterranean architecture and lush landscaping. A replica of an Andalusian hamlet, Las Casitas Village seems straight out of the south of Spain; each of the plush, pricey units here has a full kitchen. A short walk downhill takes you to Las Olas Village, a cluster of tastefully modern accommodations. At sea level, adjacent to an armada of pleasure craft bobbing at anchor, is La Marina Village, whose balconies seem to hang directly over the water. All the far-flung elements of the resort are connected by serpentine, landscaped walkways and by a railroad-style funicular that makes frequent trips up and down the hillside. The accommodations are outfitted with comfortable and stylish furniture, soft tropical colors, and robes.
The resort has an array of restaurants and lounges; you could live here for a month and always sample something new and different. One of the most comprehensive spas in the world, The Golden Door, maintains a branch in this resort. The hotel is sole owner of a "fantasy island" (Palomino Island), with caverns, nature trails, horseback riding, and watersports such as scuba diving, windsurfing, and snorkeling. About half a mile (.8km) offshore, the island is connected by free ferries to the main hotel at frequent intervals. Camp Coquí on Palomino Island is for children 3 to 12 years old.
Facilities: 10 restaurants; 7 bars; 6 pools; golf course; 7 Har-Tru tennis courts; health club; spa; children's programs; tour desk; watersports equipment/rentals; business center; 24-hr. room service; massage; laundry service; dry cleaning; rooms for those w/limited mobility; casino; nightclub; 25-slip marina; fishing; sailing; dive shop.
