Frommer's Review

When it was built, the massive Monte Carlo was the world's seventh-largest hotel. It's now considerably overshadowed by its high-profile, all the more luxe-intensive brethren. Entering it is still nice, as it comes off as a European casino hotel alternative, replete with Corinthian colonnades, triumphal arches, and big and busy statuary, with an entranceway opening onto a bustling casino. A separate entrance in the rear of the hotel leads to a splendid marble-floored, crystal-chandeliered lobby evocative of a European grand hotel. We love that the guest rooms are accessible without going through the casino, but we don't really love the rooms themselves, as they are smaller than what we've grown accustomed to, especially in terms of bathroom square-footage. Still, the revamp should help. The pool area, once the very last word in local pool fun, is now put to shame by better versions (including superior lazy rivers) at Mandalay Bay and the MGM Grand. It does have a number of child-/family-/budget-friendly restaurants. Note that it's right in the path of the massive CityCenter construction, so the noise from that could be a factor during your stay.

That gutted top level has been completely redone and made into an independently operated mini-boutique hotel called Hotel 32. A free limo ride whisks you to a greeter who puts you in your private elevator straight to the top and checks you into your handsome and masculine room or suite, which come with some pretty swish details. Don't miss the club room with the free snacks. You're going to pay five times as much for these perks, but it might work out to be a better deal for luxury than the Four Seasons, so comparison shop.

The Dragon Noodle Co., Diablo's Cantina, and buffet are here. In addition, the bad news that the original classic Downtown French restaurant Andre's has closed was somewhat leavened by the fact that the branch here is still serving. There's also a large and overly ornate casino, plus a lavish showroom that currently hosts the recommended show by magician Lance Burton.

Monte Carlo's health club and spa are nothing special and at $23 a day, not cheap.

Facilities:
7 restaurants; food court; casino; concierge; executive-level rooms; health club; Jacuzzi; outdoor pool w/wave pool and lazy river; room service; showroom; spa; watersports equipment/rentals; wedding chapel

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
