El Cortez Hotel & Casino Review

Finally, a much-needed (as opposed to just done because everyone else is doing it) and well-conceived renovation has given an old-timer an unexpected new shot of life. The public areas are totally refreshed: Check out those cherrywood and oxidized metal panel sheets on the walls -- you just don't see something that contemporary and design-intensive all that often in Downtown. By daringly removing half the slot machines, the casino floor has been opened up and aired out. The new entrance exterior, with its stonework, planters, hitching posts, and stone driveway, makes this feel like an entirely new hotel. Even more exciting, a proper plaza, with trees, fountains, and the like, which seems totally alien to the concept of Vegas, has been added. Rooms in the main hotel (some quite large) have gotten new traditional furnishings; admittedly, nothing stands out, but with such amenities as flatscreen TVs, nice new (if small) bathrooms, armoires with actual minifridges, and Wi-Fi (for a fee), they are right behind Main Street Station for recommendable, affordable downtown lodgings.

Most notable here are the Cabana Suites. Formerly the rattrap Ogden House across the street, the building was remodeled into a modern/retro wonder complete with mod decor, Swarovski crystal chandeliers, custom furnishings, a small gym, and a funky lobby with a fireplace and concierge service. They took 102 rooms and turned them into 64 bigger rooms, all with updated appointments, modern bathrooms, and a full host of amenities. These rooms could compete with many on the Strip for significantly less money.

There are a couple of dependable restaurants including a steakhouse on site, and future renovations will include a pool. Many of the employees have been here well over a dozen years, which says a lot. Local legend Jackie Gaughan still lives in the penthouse and wanders through the property. Forget the manufactured versions -- this is the real thing, updated but without losing its identity, and for at least half the price.

Facilities:
3 restaurants; small food court; casino

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
