Pur ReviewThere's lots of emphasis on the young, the restless, and the emotionally available at this restaurant and bar. As such, you'll find a venue that seems to change radically throughout the day and night. At least some of this results from long communal tables illuminated at night with lots of candles artfully shoved into candelabras. There's an impressive list of cocktails, and a winning, and rather large, selection of wines from around Europe, each sold by the glass, which taste especially good when accompanied with menu items which seem designed to be shared with other diners. Examples include a panna cotta of foie gras with port-flavored cream sauce; cabbage rolls with enoki mushrooms and satay (peanut) sauce; a crostini (broiled sandwich) brillat-savarin with smoked salmon and melon; roasted strips of duck with truffled potato slices and stewed eggplant; and a well-prepared version of Norwegian salmon with a gratin of pistachios, basil, and mushroom-stuffed crepes. Be warned in advance that if you miss mealtime at this place, by even as much as a minute or two, the staff will have made a stampede to shut the kitchens down tight, like a drum, and no amount of coaxing will prompt the strong-willed staff here to change its mind and actually bring out any food. That lack of hospitality aside, you still might meet some counterculture city residents here, albeit with lots of emphasis on 20- and 30-somethings. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
