The Great House Hotel

With its Georgian facade and location near the marketplace, the Great House is the town's finest place to dine, a quintessentially French hotel in a beautiful English town. The interior is also attractively decorated, with Laura Ashley prints, an inglenook fireplace, and old oak beams. Assisted by his wife, Martine, owner Régis Crépy does double duty as the chef de cuisine. He is an inventive, quixotic cook, as reflected by such dishes as roasted rack of English lamb with rosemary jus or grilled marinated filet of red mullet with braised chicory. Another specialty is grilled saddle of venison in red-wine-and-cranberry sauce.

The house also rents five elegantly decorated suites for £85 to £180 for a double, including an English breakfast. The units have TVs, phones, and private bathrooms or showers.
