Ballooning -- One of the most unique ways to see this spectacular river canyon is from overhead in a hot-air balloon with Balloons Over Letchworth (tel. 585/493-3340; www.balloonsoverletchworth.com). Float over the gorge in a seven-story hot-air balloon and look down on the many waterfalls and towering cliffs -- and end the ride with a champagne celebration. Flights take place from April to October at a price of $225 per person; go in October when the foliage is on full display. Plan on 3 hours total; you'll be in the air 45 minutes to an hour. Flights depart from the Middle/Upper Falls picnic area.

Hiking -- The most scenic hike here is the Gorge Trail, which follows the river as it meanders through the park. It's a 7-mile trail one-way and moderately difficult, so don't do the whole thing unless you're feeling adventuresome. For an easy .75-mile hike -- and one you can do with the kids -- the Pond Trail takes you out to a small pond stocked with fish (no fishing unless you have a license).

Rafting -- See the park from the bottom up, screaming as you course through the rushing white water: Take a 5 1/2-mile trip along the Genesee River through Class II white water with Adventure Calls Outfitters (tel. 888/270-2410 or 585/343-4710; www.adventure-calls.com). The trip is perfect for novices and families. You can even get out of the rafts and go bodysurfing at the New Wave Rapids or get soaking wet at the Leap of Faith. Open April to mid-November, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays ($30); from the end of June to the end of August, also open Tuesday to Friday ($28).
