Organized ToursThe best way to see the town and environs on foot is in the company of Levuka native Noa "Nox" Vueti of Nox Walking Tours. His 2-hour historical walking tour of town is well worth the F$10 (US$6.50/£3.30) per person. He also leads walks to Waitovu waterfall and climbs up to the top of the peak overlooking town; these trips cost F$15 (US$9.70/£5) per person. The climb to the peak takes 1 1/2 hours each way and is not for anyone who is out of shape. Book either excursion through Ovalau Watersports (tel. 344 0166). Epi's Inland Tour (tel. 362 4174 or 923 6011) departs at 11am and goes by truck to Lovoni village, up in the central crater. The visit includes a sevusevu (kava) welcoming ceremony and lunch of traditional Fijian food in the village, then a walk into a nearby rainforest. The trips cost F$50 (US$32/£17) per person if less than four go, or F$40 (US$26/£13) a head for four or more. You'll get back to town about 6pm. Reservations are required, so call Epi or book at the Royal Hotel. Ovalau Watersports (tel. 344 0166) organizes Tea and Talanoa visits with veteran Levuka residents "Bubu" Kara and Duncan Creighton, who serve tea and tell tales about the island's old days and explain Fijian culture and customs. Talanoa is Fijian for sitting down and having a long talk, and it's well worth F$14 (US$9.10/£4.70) to do just that with these knowledgeable locals.
