Ovalau's lack of beaches means that watersports are limited here. One exception is the ubiquitous Ovalau Watersports (tel. 440 611; www.owlfiji.com), which offers scuba diving and teaches PADI courses. Owner Noby Dehm has pioneered diving in the Lomaviti Islands and knows the area better than anyone. Nearby dive sites include several shipwrecks in and near Levuka harbor, and Levuka Pass, which is inhabited by a multitude of fish and sharks. Weather permitting, Noby also takes divers to Wakaya Passage, where manta rays congregate from June through August and hammerhead sharks are regularly seen. Noby charges F$140 (US$91/£47) for a two-tank dive and teaches PADI open-water courses for F$590 (US$383/£197). Snorkelers can go along on the nearby dive trips for F$40 (US$26/£13) each.
Ovalau is a fine place to go hiking, whether it's a long walk along the shoreline on either side of Levuka, or climbing into the mountains above the town. I don't, however, advise wandering into the mountains by yourself; instead, go with Nox Walking Tours. You'll be rewarded with some terrific views on his hike to the peak overlooking Levuka and the Lomaviti Islands. Epi's Inland Tour to Lovoni village includes rainforest hikes followed by a dip in the cool stream flowing through the village.
