Introduction to Lhatse148km (92 miles) W of Shigatse, 325km (202 miles) NE of Zhangmu. Altitude: 4,000m (13,120 ft.) The Friendship Highway now bypasses the small town of Lhatse by a few miles, but it remains the jumping-off point for trips to Mount Kailash and Ali. Though there's nothing much to see here, the Tibetan end of town is attractive, and the town can be used as an overnight stop between Lhasa and the Nepali border.
