Nightlife

In addition to the Wig & Mitre, drop by Adam & Eve Tavern, 25 Lindum Rd. (tel. 01522/537108), the oldest pub in Lincoln, dating from 1701, to knock back a Magnet, Old Speckled Hen, or Theakston's Best Bitter in a homey, cottage atmosphere complete with gas fires and a large front garden for warm-weather drinking and browsing.

The Jolly Brewer, 27 Broadgate (tel. 01522/528583; www.thejollybrewer.co.uk), dates from 1850, and it's a basic wooden-floorboards place where you'll be welcomed into a friendly crowd. If you're hungry, there's pub grub at lunchtime only, and draft ales include Tiger Bitter and Robinson's, as well as rotating guests.
