Tollgate Hill Inn

The centerpiece of this red-barn complex is a 1745 structure known as the Captain William Bull Tavern, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It houses the bar and restaurant, and it's as atmospheric as all get out, with random-width floors and walls and a marvelously worn bar with a fireplace inglenook. After the new owners brought the kitchen up to code, they turned their attention to the bedrooms in the outlying buildings. Do inspect yours before accepting it, for there are substantial variations in size and configuration. Children and well-behaved pets are welcome.

With relatively few local options, the rejuvenated restaurant was instantly in demand, not least because the menu includes such delights as marinated roasted chicken breast stuffed with pumpkin and served with goat cheese sauce. Open Thursday through Saturday for dinner.
