Lofer has a Bauerntheater (Peasant Theater) and a Gothic-style Pfarrkirche (Parish Church), whose tower dominates the town with its two onion-shape domes. Many houses are decorated with oriels, an architectural style inspired by nearby Bavaria.

Lofer doubles as a health resort and a ski center, offering hospitality, tradition, and rural charm. It's known for its peat-water and mud baths, as well as its Kneipp cures. The area around Lofer is nice for walking or hiking in both summer and winter. Sports facilities include a tennis court, skating rink, miniature golf course, and enclosed swimming pool.

A ski school operates here, and there are nine T-bar lifts. A chairlift will deliver you to the Sonnegg-Loderbühel at 1,003m (3,291 ft.) and the upper station of the Loferer Alm at 1,403m (4,603 ft.). Rising in the background of the town are the Loferer Steinberge and the Reiter Steinberge.

You can visit Lamprechtshöhle (tel. 06582/8343), Austria's deepest water-bearing cave, on the road from Lofer to Weissbach (Rte. 311), about 60km (37 miles) from Salzburg by bus. A guided tour takes about 40 minutes. The cavern is open daily 8:30am to 6pm; admission is 3.60€ ($5.80) for adults and 1.80€ ($2.90) for children. It's closed March to April 15 and October 20 to December 15.
