A few miles up the road from Senggigi Beach makes a world of difference. Alang Alang, meaning "thatched roof" in Indonesian, is that perfectly characteristic property you hoped to find at the end of your travels. It's small scale, affordable, beachfront, and far enough away from any real center of things to discourage touts. All but three of the bungalow units have "au naturel" outdoor bathrooms and showers, while inside are simple boutique rooms featuring carved platform beds, embroidered mosquito netting, and nice touches like soaps wrapped in dried coconut leaves. Get a bunch of friends together and rent the villa, a veritable Raja's palace with its own private beachfront swimming pool, kitchen, dining area, and two luxury outdoor bathrooms, both with the john out under the stars. There's also a romantic oceanfront restaurant.
