The story goes that the sea captain Christopher Jones lived around here and in 1620, some dissenters recruited him, boarded his ship The Mayflower alongside this pub (then The Shippe; this building is from the 1700s), and set sail to Southampton, then Plymouth, and thence to the New World. It’s hard to imagine, and otherwise, it’s a fairly traditional pub (oak beams, wood paneling) with real ales and a fire. The tiny backyard on the Thames is a worthy place to raise a pint and mull your personal slice of the river on a summer day. Would the Pilgrims have called that a sin?
