Lopez Village is the closest thing to a town on this island, and it's where you'll find almost all the restaurants and shops.

At the Lopez Island Historical Museum, Weeks Road (tel. 360/468-2049; www.lopezmuseum.org), in Lopez Village, you can learn about the island's history and pick up a map of its historic buildings. The museum is open May through September, Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 4pm.

Lopez Island Vineyards, 724 Fisherman Bay Rd. (tel. 360/468-3644; www.lopezislandvineyards.com), between the ferry landing and Lopez Village, was the first winery to make wine from grapes grown here in the San Juans. Both its Siegerrebe and Madeleine Angevine are from local grapes, and its organic fruit wines are made with local fruit. Lopez Island Vineyards also makes wines from grapes grown in the Yakima Valley. In July and August, the winery tasting room is open Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 5pm; in May, June, and September it's open on Friday and Saturday from noon to 5pm; and in April and October through mid-December it's open on Saturday from noon to 5pm.

From June to Labor Day, you can pick organic strawberries a couple of days a week at Crowfoot Farm, 3759 Port Stanley Rd. (tel. 360/468-4748). This U-pick farm is a mile or so east of Lopez Village at the corner of Port Stanley and Hummel Lake roads. Be sure to call first to find out if there are berries and which days the farm will be open.
