Frommer's Review
"JiRaffe" -- no, it's not named after the long-necked creature, but after a blending of names from the two chefs responsible for this overnight sensation now in its 10th year. Josiah Citrin has since left partner Raphael Lunetta to carry on alone at this crowded, upscale bistro in restaurant-hungry Santa Monica. The deafening din of conversation here is usually praise for JiRaffe's artistic treatment of pepper-crusted ahi tuna, crispy Maine salmon, pancetta-wrapped tiger shrimp, and caramelized pork chops with smoked bacon, apple chutney, and cider sauce. If you're a connoisseur of gnocchi, try the purple Peruvian gnocchi with fresh Florida rock shrimp and roasted purple pearl onions. JiRaffe also wins culinary points for highlighting oft-ignored vegetables such as salsify, Swiss chard, and fennel, as well as complex appetizers that are more like miniature main dishes. For dessert, say hello to a slice of warm chocolate truffle cake and a cup of coffee. Tip: Visit JiRaffe's website for Chef Lunetta's special recipes.
