Mastro's Steakhouse Review

This is one of the best steakhouses in Southern California. Typical of an upscale steakhouse, the dimly lit dining room on the first floor has a dark, leathery, serious men's club feel to it, so be sure to request a table on the second floor, where the bar, live music, and cool vibe are located. Slide into a plush black leather booth, order a Mastro Dry Ice Martini (which comes with the shaker, so it takes only one to get a groove on), and start off the feast with an Iced Seafood Tower -- a massive pyramid of crab legs, lobster, shrimp, clams, and oysters. The Fred Flintstone-size slabs of hand-cut USDA beef are served on sizzling plates heated to 400°F (204°C) so your steak stays warm and juicy throughout the meal. Greens are always a good idea -- as is the decadent lobster mashed potatoes. The bad news is that a bone-in rib-eye runs about $50; the good news is that one will feed three normal-size people. Tip: Service runs the gamut from fawing to forgetful, often depending on how much you drop. Consider sitting at the downstairs bar for a more casual experience, though you'll miss the priceless people-watching around the piano bar upstairs.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
