Frommer's Review
It's a no-brainer: Combine the best quality steaks with a sexy decor, lively bar, and a key corner location in Santa Monica, and you'll do well. Very well. Cashing in on American's steak craze, the owners of the original Boa in West Hollywood opened this suave steakhouse at the foot of Santa Monica Boulevard. The sophisticated decor eschews the traditional dim steakhouse ambience in favor of a warm, sleek interior highlighted with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to filter in. Tough decisions abound on the menu: Should you order the bone-in filet mignon, petite filet mignon, Kobe filet mignon, 35-day dry-aged New York strip, bone-in rib-eye, flatiron steak, or porterhouse? Have it prepared with a foie gras crust, tri-peppercorn rub, chef's special J-1 sauce, or whole grain mustard? (Personally I think it's uncouth to flavor a prime cut of dry-aged beef with anything but salt and pepper.) Sides are purchased separately, the most popular being the homemade crispy fries, macaroni and cheese, and roasted garlic whipped potatoes. As for an appetizer, I love the Dungeness crab cake with tomato confit and basil aioli. For a pick-me-up dessert, try the refreshing blackberry crush cocktail, a mojito-like mixture made with fresh fruit and top-shelf vodka. Note: A second Boa steakhouse is located along the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood (8462 W. Sunset Blvd; tel. 323/650-8383).
