Mondrian ReviewTheatrical, coveted, sophisticated -- this is the kind of place superhotelier Ian Schrager has created from a once-drab apartment building. Working with designer Philippe Starck, Schrager used the Mondrian's breathtaking views (from every room) as the starting point for his vision of a "hotel in the clouds." Purposely underlit hallways lead to bright, clean rooms done in shades of white, beige, and pale gray and outfitted with simple furniture casually slip-covered in white. Thanks to renovations in 2008, the accommodations themselves -- once secondary to the superhip, star-studded scene, are now much more pleasant. Still, booking a room automatically gets you in to the poolside Skybar (soundproof windows on the entire south side of the building have already dealt with a troublesome noise problem in rooms overlooking the raucous late-night scene). In addition to its popular power-dining Asian-Latin fusion restaurant, Asia de Cuba, light meals and sushi are served at the Spin Lounge in the lobby. Then there's the elegant Agua Spa, offering a full range of spa treatments in a Zen-like atmosphere. Thankfully, the beautiful-people staff is getting much better with service than in the old days. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
