Mondrian Review

Theatrical, coveted, sophisticated -- this is the kind of place superhotelier Ian Schrager has created from a once-drab apartment building. Working with designer Philippe Starck, Schrager used the Mondrian's breathtaking views (from every room) as the starting point for his vision of a "hotel in the clouds." Purposely underlit hallways lead to bright, clean rooms done in shades of white, beige, and pale gray and outfitted with simple furniture casually slip-covered in white. Thanks to renovations in 2008, the accommodations themselves -- once secondary to the superhip, star-studded scene, are now much more pleasant. Still, booking a room automatically gets you in to the poolside Skybar (soundproof windows on the entire south side of the building have already dealt with a troublesome noise problem in rooms overlooking the raucous late-night scene). In addition to its popular power-dining Asian-Latin fusion restaurant, Asia de Cuba, light meals and sushi are served at the Spin Lounge in the lobby. Then there's the elegant Agua Spa, offering a full range of spa treatments in a Zen-like atmosphere. Thankfully, the beautiful-people staff is getting much better with service than in the old days.

Facilities:
2 restaurants; bar; concierge; exercise room; outdoor pool; room service; full-service spa

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
