Sunset Marquis Hotel & Villas ReviewThis sprawling Mediterranean-style all-suite hotel is the ultimate movie-and-music hostelry, regularly hosting the biggest names in rock and film. (The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, U2, and even Brad Pitt are all repeat customers.) In fact, the hotel even installed a state-of-the-art recording studio and screening room in the basement for its noteworthy guests. After recording sessions, the musicians can then retire to the dark and sexy Bar 1200 (a favorite refuge of celebs), where their newly recorded session can be piped in directly. Of course, unless you're staying at the hotel, you'll never get in (which, in itself, is reason enough to stay). The hotel is a short walk from the rowdy Sunset Strip, but it feels a world away, with its 4 1/2 acres of lush gardens, koi ponds, brick paths, and tropical foliage. After completing a $20-million renovation in 2009, the suites have an attractive and comfortable modern style, with streamlined furnishings. The villas take hospitality to a totally new level with private alarm systems and butlers, plus select features like baby grand pianos, flatscreen TVs, and Jacuzzi tubs. Guests who stay in the presidential villa can negotiate the use of an SUV, a Bentley, or a limo during their stay. There are also two separate pool areas, an outdoor bar, a spa, and a restaurant with patio seating. The onsite fine-dining space, known simply as RESTAURANT, does nice renditions of modern American food with fresh ingredients. Off the lobby, Maximillian Gallery exhibits contemporary art by emerging and established talent. Facilities: Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
