The Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey Review

If you're a watercraft cognoscenti and desire a serene view of more than 5,000 beautiful sailboats and yachts from your private balcony, this is the hotel for you. But it's also business-traveler friendly and not too far from LAX. In typical Ritz-Carlton fashion, the hotel is swathed in soothingly sophisticated decor -- French doors leading to small, private balconies, 32-inch plasma-screen televisions, and comfortable goose-down feather beds. The two top floors make up the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge, with a dedicated concierge, on-the-house cocktails, and complimentary gourmet spreads all day (including breakfast). Thanks to its marina location, the hotel offers yacht and sailing charters and also reserves several slips for boat-bound customers. Venice Beach is about a 15-minute walk, but it's easier to rent a bicycle from the hotel. Unfortunately, the spa was closed at press time, while the hotel looks for a new wellness-company partner. Tip: Request one of the "27 series" rooms, which are junior suites that are larger and have the best views. The hotel's restaurant, jer-ne (pronounced "journey"), serves California cuisine in a stylishly modern setting.

Facilities:
2 restaurants (but 1 is seasonal); bar/lounge; bikes; concierge; concierge-level rooms; fitness center; Jacuzzi; heated outdoor pool; room service; spa; 2 tennis courts (lit for night play); basketball court

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
