Still on L.A.'s coveted "in" list, is this überchic Santa Monica boutique hotel. It's the startling color scheme that first grabs your attention -- parrot green, driftwood gray, and wave-crest white. Then there are the dishes: hundreds of custom-made china plates arranged in symmetrical patterns throughout the hotel and guest rooms, a Kelly Wearstler design. The array of white patent-leather chaises in the lobby seems more for form than function; most guests prefer the more conventional seating in the Cameo Bar or private poolside cabanas. The edgy-English theme is applied to every guest room as well, along with an array of high-tech toys like HD flatscreen TVs and iPod docking stations. Comforts include feather duvets, Egyptian linen, and pillow-top mattresses. The restaurant, Whist, serves good Mediterranean-influenced cuisine. You'll also enjoy the location, only a short walk to the beach and in the thick of the shopping, entertainment, and restaurant scene. Tip: Splurge for an oceanview room; the only other view is of the hotel parking lot.
