Frommer's Review
Still near the top of L.A.'s coveted "in" list is this uber-chic hotel on the sea side of Santa Monica. It's the startling color scheme that first grabs your attention as you enter the lobby -- parrot green, driftwood gray, and wave-crest white. Then there are the dishes: hundreds of custom-made china plates arranged in symmetrical patterns throughout the hotel and guest rooms. The array of white patent-leather chaises in the lobby seems more for form than function; most guests prefer more conventional seating in the Cameo bar or private poolside cabanas. The edgy-English theme is applied to each guest room as well, along with an array of high-tech toys like flatscreen TVs and CD/DVD players. The restaurant, Whist, serves superb contemporary cuisine. You'll also enjoy the location, only a short walk to the beach and in the thick of the shopping, entertainment, and restaurant scene. Tip: Splurge for an oceanview room; your only other view choice is the hotel parking lot.
Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; lounge; concierge; exercise room; 2 heated outdoor pools; room service

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
