Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa ReviewOriginally opened in 1907, the opulent Huntington Hotel was one of America's grandest hotels, but not the most earthquake-proof. No matter -- the hotel was rebuilt and opened in the same spot in 1991, save its two historic ballrooms, and the astonishing authenticity (including reinstallation of many decorative features) even fools patrons from the hotel's early days. This Spanish-Mediterranean beauty sits on 23 spectacularly landscaped acres that seem a world apart from L.A., though Downtown is only 20 minutes away. Langham Hotels International took over this former Ritz-Carlton in 2008 and has invested significantly in property upgrades. The hotel's dining room, bar, club lounge, and eight cottages have all recently undergone renovations, in addition to its 11,000-square-foot full-service spa, which now offers unique services based upon traditional Chinese medicine. Each oversize guest room is conservatively dressed with Frette linens and has lots of natural light. Spend a few extra dollars on a Club Level room, which features access to the club lounge with dedicated concierge and complimentary gourmet spreads all day (including breakfast). Guests and locals enjoy the Cal-French cuisine of former Patina Group chef David Féau at the Royce, where a whimsical menu is now matched by more avant-garde design in the once staid dining room (the sommelier is spot-on in his pairings). The more casual Terrace restaurant serves meals at umbrella-covered tables by the pool and hosts an a la carte Sunday brunch. Enjoy craft beer and specialty cocktails drinks in the new Tap Room. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
