Review of FireflyOpened in 2002 by Jeffery Best, a veteran of the Hollywood club scene, this dream of a bar and restaurant is the meeting place of choice for Valley dwellers to drag their Eastside and Hollywood hipster friends. Flavored by '40s noir (think Bogie in The Big Sleep), this is a sexy and simple nightspot where visitors can recline on comfy cushions, warm up by the fire pit in the middle of the restaurant, or relax at the patio with its cabana-like tables enclosed by drapes. DJs offer up a pumping mix of soul and ambient sounds, and who knows what could happen in those coed bathrooms? The kitchen has hit or miss over the years, so there's no predicting what the food will be like when you visit. Plan on eating beforehand, though if you need to do dinner just to get in (it's still that happening), go for it -- there's nothing else this vibe-y in the Valley. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
